Our 1985 MR2 race car we bought specifically for autocross just made a surprise trip to Florida from New York City in order to get registered correctly.
With over 174,000 miles and purchased for a miserly sum well under the Craigslist ad’s original asking price - we were astounded that the only thing the car really needed over the trip was a brake caliper.
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
We didn’t realize the caliper was hanging up when we left, and five miles from our destination is when it made the first audible indication that anything was amiss.
A $40 part later and it drove for 24 hours straight through from Florida to Brooklyn.
What a happy little car.

That drive is soul sucking haha. Quite enjoyable if you take a couple days and avoid 95 though! I have to imagine the MR2 was a fun car to do it in though, so much character. I feel like a car having soul is the most important part of any road trip.

This was more of a mission than a road trip, but the MR2 did better than I expected. Even loaded with spare parts, jacks, tools, and two people the little 1.6 did better than 25mpg for most of the trip - even at 4k rpm+ to do 75mph.
The 4.30 final drive seemed insane to me at first, but it meant the engine didn’t have to struggle to keep the car going.

Yup, I’m used to the 4k rpm cruising in my Miata but at least I dont have the motor right behind my head. But at least we are in the power band at that point so theres still passing power!
